Littleton Police Department Launches “Blue Envelope Program” to Support Drivers with Autism and Other Communication Needs

The Littleton Police Department (LPD) is proud to announce the implementation of the Blue Envelope Program, a new initiative designed to improve communication and understanding between law enforcement and community members who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other communication differences.

The Blue Envelope Program provides participating drivers with a bright blue envelope to store their driver’s license, registration, and insurance card. If stopped by law enforcement, the driver can hand the blue envelope to the officer, signaling that the individual may have unique communication needs or sensory sensitivities.

“Building trust and ensuring the safety of all members of our community is a top priority,” said Police Chief Doug Stephens. “The Blue Envelope Program helps our officers recognize when a driver might need additional patience or a different approach during a traffic stop or roadside interaction.”

LPD officers have received specialized training on how to best interact with individuals using the Blue Envelope. The envelope also includes helpful tips for both drivers and officers to create a calm and respectful interaction.

How to Participate
Community members who would like a blue envelope can visit the Littleton Police Department, 2255 W. Berry Ave, to pick up a packet. They can utilize the intercom near the front entrance or ask the receptionist at the front desk for help, and an officer will provide assistance.

This initiative is modeled after successful programs in other Colorado communities and reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, understanding, and community partnership.
