Graphic with tips to avoid scams. Tips are listed in the news story

The Littleton Police Department (LPD) would like to raise community awareness regarding skimmer devices. On January 30, a group of law enforcement experts discovered 19 skimmer devices across the Denver Metro Area.

Skimmers are devices that are illegally attached to credit card readers at ATMs, gas pumps, or checkout lanes. These devices are designed to secretly steal credit/debit card data and PINs.

LPD would like to remind our community to always be vigilant. Here are some tips to help keep you safe:

  • Inspect ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and other card readers. Look for anything loose, crooked, damaged, or scratched. Do no use a card reader if anything appears unusual.
  • Whenever possible, use tap-to-pay technology or use debit and credit cards with chip technology.
  • If using a debit card at a gas station, run it as a credit card and avoid entering a PIN number. If that is not an option, customers should use their hand to hide their PIN to block scammers who may be using tiny pinhole cameras above the keypad area to record entries.
  • Use ATMs in well-lit areas.
  • Be aware of skimming devices in tourist areas, which are popular targets.

The LPD remains committed to the safety of our community. We are always here if you need assistance. If you are experiencing an emergency, please do not hesitate to call 911.
