Littleton Police Department Welcomes New Therapy Dog

The Littleton Police Department (LPD) is excited to introduce its newest four-legged team member. Thistle is a 2-year-old Newfoundland who will be joining the department’s commitment to supporting the emotional well-being of our community.

Despite his name, Thistle is anything but prickly. This big, lovable black Newfoundland has a way of getting right into your heart, offering comfort, companionship, and a little extra joy wherever he goes. With his calm personality, gentle nature, and impressive ability to make people smile, Thistle has a special talent for bringing comfort and connection.

Thistle came to the LPD through Freedom Service Dogs, an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and other challenges through the placement of specially trained service and support dogs.

Beginning this fall, Thistle will join his handler, School Resource Officer (SRO) Mallory Atkinson, at Heritage High School, where he will support students, staff, and the school community as part of the LPD’s ongoing efforts to build relationships and provide resources that promote safety, wellness, and connection.

 “Thistle brings an enormous heart and gentle spirit that make him perfectly suited for his role in providing therapeutic support to students,” said SRO Mallory Atkinson.

“We are thrilled to welcome Thistle to the LPD family,” said Interim Police Chief Gene Enley. “Our school resource officers do so much more than provide safety; they build trust, support students, and create meaningful relationships. Thistle will be an incredible addition to that mission.”
