Increase in Online Dating Scams

The Littleton Police Department (LPD) has seen an increase in online dating scams. The most common incidences are groups posing as men on the internet who target middle-aged women. They will embark in online relationships with them, and then ask for money. The money will usually be for emergencies, hospital bills, travel etc. These groups may also ask for short-term loans and even send fraudulent checks as a form of reimbursement.

Don’t become a victim:

  • Slow down and be vigilant.
  • Don’t be rushed into sending money.
  • Ask questions and do some research. Individuals can use a Reverse Google Search by dropping images into the search bar. Often images that are being used for a fake profile will be flagged as such.
  • Never wire money, put money on a gift card or cash reload card, or send money to an online love interest.
