Officers with R2D2 for Halloween

The Littleton Police Department (LPD) encourages residents to plan, stay alert, and look out for one another as trick-or-treaters take to the streets this Halloween.

Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

  • Be visible. Carry a flashlight or glow stick and consider adding reflective tape to costumes and treat bags so drivers can see you after dark.
  • Cross streets safely. Use crosswalks whenever possible, look both ways before crossing, and make eye contact with drivers. Avoid darting between parked cars.
  • Stay on sidewalks. If sidewalks are unavailable, walk facing traffic and stay as far from vehicles as possible.
  • Travel together. Young children should be accompanied by a trusted adult. Older children should trick-or-treat in groups, follow a planned route and establish a check-in time.
  • Choose costumes carefully. Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Face paint can be a good alternative to masks that restrict vision.
  • Check treats before eating. Have a trusted adult inspect candy and other treats before enjoying them.

Safety Reminders for Drivers

Drivers should use extra caution on Halloween, particularly in residential neighborhoods where children may be walking near roadways. Slow down, watch carefully for pedestrians, eliminate distractions, and remain especially alert during evening hours. Never drive while impaired. By taking a few simple precautions, residents can help make the holiday safer for trick-or-treaters, families and drivers throughout Littleton.

Daylight Saving Time

When clocks "fall back" on Sunday, earlier evening darkness increases safety risks on the road and during commutes. Safety is a community effort. Check out these tips.
