In light of the recent news coverage regarding the increase in metro wide home burglaries, the Littleton Police Department (LPD) is encouraging residents to take steps to keep them and their homes safe.

1. Enhance Security with Technology

  • Consider installing an alarm system and have good exterior lighting.
  • If an alarm is present in the home, make sure that it is properly working and active both when home and away.
  • Have cameras installed inside and outside of the home and ensure that they are working properly.
  • Install automated interior lighting that turns on and off on a schedule or that can be controlled remotely.

2. Secure Entry Points:

  • Keep all doors and windows locked, including upper levels, even when someone is home.
  • Trim or remove landscaping that provides hiding places around vulnerable doors and windows.
  • Keep the garage door closed and locked, and ensure the interior door to the house is also locked.
  • Don't leave a spare key outside.

3. Deterrence:

  • Install bright, well-placed exterior lighting to illuminate entry points and walkways.
  • Consider motion-activated lights to deter potential burglars.
  • Consider a home security audit to identify vulnerabilities and recommend security improvements.
  • Keep valuables hidden from plain sight. Store them in a heavy-duty safe that cannot be easily broken into or removed.
  • Photograph valuables in their locations around your home and make a list of make, model and serial numbers.

If residents observe any unusual activity or suspicious persons in a neighborhood, please contact LPD’s non-emergency line at (303) 794-1551. In case of an emergency, please dial 911.
