Police Respond to Call of Armed Individual at Littleton High School

The Littleton Police Department (LPD) responded to a call of an armed individual at Littleton High School (LHS) at 1:45 p.m. today. Audible gunshots were present in the background of the call. LPD was immediately in contact with the School Resource Officer (SRO), who was at the school at the time, and the school was placed on lockdown. The SRO conveyed that they were not aware of any shots being fired or any immediate threat.

While LPD was aware of multiple false calls at schools across the state today, the department treated this as a legitimate threat until they could determine otherwise. As a precaution, LPD worked with Littleton Public Schools (LPS) to place Littleton Preparatory Charter School, Field Elementary School, and East Elementary School on secure perimeter, meaning students and staff must remain inside the building.

The first responding officer arrived to LHS just three minutes after the initial call, at 1:48 p.m., and immediately made entry into the school. In total 22 officers responded to the call and worked for just under two hours to secure the building, ultimately determining that there were no injured parties and no threat. Students were then released from school and allowed to leave the premises.

The LPD is committed to the safety of the Littleton community. The department treats every call as genuine and with professionalism and will continue to do so in the future. LPD conducts extensive training and has comprehensive plans in place for incidents such as these. LPD is extremely proud of the conduct displayed by the officers, dispatchers, students, staff, and community partners during today’s events.

Due to calls of similar nature occurring across the state today, LPD is working with local partners and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as investigations into this incident move forward.
